Our Volunteers
There are many ways to volunteer and get involved. You can organize a local Fonkoze support group in your hometown, or you can even volunteer your services in Haiti.
Our local support group in Abany, NY is a great example of how a small group of citizens can come together to support the work of Fonkoze, while raising awareness about Haiti. Fonkoze Albany has participated in recruiting delegates for Fonkoze USA trips to Haiti. They have hosted successful speaker’s events (Alex Counts of the Grameen Foundation, Anne Hastings and Father Joseph Philippe of Fonkoze, and Michele Montas of the United Nations, to name a few), organized silent auctions and Haitian art sales, and written grant proposals. Their work greatly benefits the important programs and activities of Fonkoze in Haiti, especially Fonkoze’s educational programs.
Other local support groups are active in Brooklyn, NY, Philadelphia, PA, and Santa Barbara, CA. The Santa Barbara community, for example, is focused on raising the funds necessary to finance a Fonkoze branch office on Jean Rabel, Haiti. The students of the Newman Catholic Center in Charleston, IL have almost reached their goal of sponsoring a branch of Fonkoze in Fon Veret, Haiti. And, our new supporters in Brooklyn organized a successful fundraiser in September 2008 to benefit Fonkoze clients and staff who suffered greatly due to hurricanes.
Over the years, others have volunteered their technical skills and services “on the ground” in Haiti. One of our most valuable volunteers at the moment is Steven Werlin, a professor from Shimer College, who works full-time for Fonkoze as a volunteer.
