The Haitian Diaspora is often known as the ‘tenth’ department of Haiti. Many are actively involved in the development of their country. Louis Prezeau is an excellent example of a member of the Diaspora who is making a difference in the lives of Haitians and Haitian Americans by helping to facilitate the flow of remittances from the Diaspora into Haiti.

In April 2004, Ray Escoffier left the quiet town of Charlottesville, Virginia to accompany Anne Hastings, the Director of Fonkoze, and Jean Edner (Johnny) Nelson, the Director of Fonkoze Financial Services, on a trip to the Philippines that would change how he viewed microfinance and Fonkoze forever.

Fonkoze USA channels these loans to Fonkoze in Haiti to support the growth of the portfolio of new branches and our business development program, which provides loans to small business owners and agricultural cooperatives. Dr. Rosemary Edwards, a long time Haiti activist, recently joined Fonkoze USA’s growing pool of social investors.
