IFC Awards $1.96 Million to Insure Haitian Entrepreneurs against Natural Disasters
Port-au-Prince, January 29, 2013 - IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, is partnering with donors and the Microinsurance Catastrophe Risk Organisation (MiCRO) to help thousands of low-income micro entrepreneurs protect their livelihoods against weather-related risks and natural disasters.
MiCRO and Fonkoze to provide swift insurance payout after Hurricane Sandy
The reinsurance company Microinsurance Catastrophe Risk Organisation (MiCRO) will make a significant payout to the Haitian microfinance institution Fonkoze following Hurricane Sandy. Fonkoze will use these funds to pay a fixed sum of Haitian Gourdes 5,000 (USD 125) and to cancel the outstanding loan balances of thousands of female microentrepreneurs who lost their homes or inventories. MiCRO expects the payout to be made to Fonkoze in the next few weeks.
Zafèn raises capital for 30 women-owned businesses affected by earthquake
During the month of September, Zafèn, a program run by Fonkoze and a crowd-funding portal for socially responsible Haitian entrepreneurs and other Haiti supporters, fully funded the budget needs of 30 women-run businesses devastated by the 2010 earthquake.
